Please do not fall into the FinAid syndrome. I suffered from it many a times. All of a sudden you have this nice fat check and your mind goes into splurge mode. You have been deprived of your "wants" so long now your in spending mode. Don't spend the money you just received on things you do not need. The trip to the Spa could have waited a bit longer. get your stuff str8t first before you splurge. I am not saying you can't splurge but do it after you have done all you can with your debt. I know form experience that little things like a $64 dollar Spa trip can add it. And the parking/moving violations??? You know what $1100+ could have done to your debt. Can you just imagine? Your car doesn't get you in trouble. The person parking it illegally does. Financial empowerment doesn't happen with just being wise in your finances but being wise in all aspects.

You have taken the first step in conquering your debt and getting your financial life in order. Keep going. Don't back slide and bury yourself in lil mistakes. These things add up. No one is perfect. Sometimes you are going to fall down. When it does happen just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get back on the path to financial empowerment.

As far as the budget, I think you should create one now. Or at least create a plan on what to do with the FinAid check you just got and see it out. Waiting till mid-October or November give you about a month, month and a half with $4100 just lying around. I would hate for you to get this opportunity to kill of some of this debt and wind up in a bigger hole then you are now. (I did this same thing last year. Worst thing I could have done to myself).

Amen. I am in the same boat. Only thing with me is that if I tithe appropriately, which is $400 a month, I would not be able to save any money or have money to pay off my debts. I can't believe that God wants me to remain in this position. Its hard to say that because He wasn't the one who put me there was he? I put myself there. So should he have to pay for that?? Thats what I struggle with. For now I tithe what I can so that I can still keep my cc debt snowball going. I think he will understand. He knows my heart. its not like I am taking the money and splurging in on mess.

I need to set up a budget! Ahh! I think I am going to ask him if I can pay the cable bill, and also upgrade the cable. Maybe get him the NFL Season ticket or something.

The order of saving will be as follows:

1. clear up credit report debt
2. save up to move out
3. save at least $1K in emergency funds
4. start paying off the car note faster, and pay towards emergency fund, and school loans.

Yeah, this is definitely a different type of refund. I never got ones this big every semester. I got the check today. Hopefully I won't be tempted to spend.

Open up a business account, separate from your personal stuff. That way you are not tempted to use it.

I want to start my own business to. I actually want a number of them. I just don't know where to start or how to go about it.

Are you going for your MBA?

Smart move or not, its too late to back out. Split the refund between your emergency fund and your debt. Maybe pay a couple of bills for your dad.

I used to love financial aid refunds. It was like having Christmas 3 times a year (fall, spring, and summer) *sigh*

If you can stay at your dad's for much longer than I suggest you do so. Its hard to clean up your credit and pay off debt if you have a $800+ rent to pay. Don't forget utilities. A basic emergency fund should equal about 3 months worth of living expenses, including groceries, gas, bills, minimum debt payemts, etc.

Talk to your dad and make sure you guys are on the same page. Maybe pay one of the utility bills for him, like the electricity bill or something. That way your contributing in some way. Do you have a budget? Try setting one up. Juggle around your money and find a routine that works.

WOW! Thanks for being so honest. When I came to college I was so set on being independent. My reasoning being that I didn't want to bother my parents. I was the oldest of four and my parents were from another country who worked overtime to provide a good home for us. I never got a credit card or student loan until I got pregnant my sophomore year. My parents stopped speaking to me for a while and I had to find a way to provide for my daughter. I took out student loans even though I didn't need them. I opened 5 credit cards in one year. All so that I could support myself and my daughter while I finished up school. I can't even say I regret it. My daughter had to food to eat and clothes on her back.

Needless to say we live and we learn. Its good that you are taking action now. Do what you gotta do and get ya money right girl.
